AOS will be premiering a new format on May 25th, from 19:00 to 20:00 in Madrid at MMMAD, Madrid’s Digital Arts Festival, with the fundamental support of Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Madrid, who made it possible.
The new format
The new format is an archive, which tries to find possible answers to the question: how do you preserve technological artworks?
This may seem as a straightforward technical question, but it has multiple very critical implications: obsolescence, media decay, technological geopolitics (see, for example, Geocities being taken down, together with around 4 million artworks in it), copyrights, hardware and software platforms that don’t exist anymore, transforming relationships with media, etc.
In a novel Fahrenheit451-like approach, one way to preserve these parts of our cultural heritage is to teach people how to make a new artwork like the one you want to preserve: in the age of knowledge, Art is Open Source.
The first artwork that will benefit from this format will be BodyQuake, which we created together with our beloved friend and colleague Francesca Fini back in 2017: a beatiful collaboration between Science, Technology and the Arts which deals with a very serious issue: Epilepsy.
