VersuS the realtime lives of cities

We will officially present it as part of a novel form of radio show, in which a musical voyage through the cities of the planet will allow us to experience in realtime the emotions expressed by people through social networks.

Music, as other forms of expression, originates from the cultures, backgrounds, emotions and desires of people living in cities, territories and immersed in landscapes and visions. The sounds, fragrances, environments, economies, events of those places generate the sounds which artists express in their music.

We can imagine music to be, in a way, a generative form of art, through which the emotions, sensations and visions of people are expressed in aesthetic ways.

Today, we benefit from novel forms of expression, using ubiquitous technologies and networks, and we constantly generate information about our feelings and visions through the many digital interconnections which are interweaved with every part of our daily activity, either voluntarily or even without knowing about it.

With the VersuS (and ConnectiCity) project, we explored the ways in which we can become active observers of this scenario, capturing and interpreting the emotions, feelings, sensations, desires and visions of our cities, as expressed by people using digital devices and ubiquitous technologies, and by the city itself, through sensors and realtime information.

VersuS the realtime lives of cities

In this occasion, we wish to create a tool that can be used to represent and interact with this richness of information, to better understand the cities we live in, and to become more aware and conscious of our environment and of the human population sharing with us our urban spaces.

The VersuS project aims at creating novel ways in which it is possible to listen to cities in real-time.

On January 5th, we will perform a voyage through music, exploring cities, the sounds that have originated in them over the years, and at the same time looking at the emotions which are expressed in realtime in those same locations, finding clues about what people  think, experience, feel, express, and how it relates to the ways in artists capture and represent the essence of urban spaces.

(NOTE: the project in this version uses the 3D earth and libraries provided in one of the examples of the Three.js 3D javascript library by MrDoob, is created using WebGL and is best experienced on Chrome browsers)

PRESS RELEASE:

Travel through 6 cities, in Italy, Europe and the United States. A live performance capturing in real time the emotions of cities, in an open dialogue with music.

On January 5th 2012, on RaiTunes, the sounds of Alessio Bertallot meet the hybrid, neo-real worlds of Salvatore Iaconesi and Oriana Persico. The language of radio will be  contaminated with the language of new media arts, generating novel forms of expression and narratives.

Starting at 11pm and up to 11:40pm, “VersuS, the real time lives of cities” will be showcased in an entirely new version created to interact in real time with the RaiTunes playlist.

This version of the VersuS project will be officially presented during the broadcast, in which listeners will be invited to a realtime voyage into music and the emotions of London, New York, Philadelphia, Berlin, Bristol and Milan.

Moving from city to city, Alessio Bertallot will lead the audience through the discovery of the music that originates in those places, expression of concrete and flesh.

Simultaneously, planet earth will revolve towards the cities: a plunging zoom will allow us to experience cities’ chitchat in front of our eyes; the messages which people, in that moment, are exchanging on social networks will be captured, analyzed, and shown over the places in which they originated, in a dynamic, neo-real, visualization, showing in realtime the sensations of the people which live in that city, transforming us into global eyes, in emotional voyeurs of the whole planet.

All together for the presentation of Ubiquitous Pompei

This has been an incredible experience for us. The possibility to work in tight contact with young students and to become enablers for their awareness of the possibilities offered by technologies and networks has been an amazing opportunity.

We were able to explore with the students the concepts of new forms of citizenship, innovative forms of participation and collaboration, novel ways of deciding and evaluating public policies, engaging ways of narrating the stories of the places in which they live, getting people, companies and administrations involved.

The workshops were used to introduce students to the opportunities and scenarios offered by ubiquitous technologies such as augmented reality, location based media and services, and QRCodes and other digital tagging techniques. On top of that, students and educators were  introduced to the MACME and NeoReality technologies, to be used in the process of imagining and creating the prototypes used to describe the digital future of the City of Pompei.

The technologies have been provided to students, educators and public administrators through an open platform. It can be found here (click to open PompeiAR, the tech platform used to create Ubiquitous Pompei).

Art is Open Source and FakePress Publishing will maintain the platform open and accessible to students/educators/administrators to allow them to continue in their journey through technological innovation: continuous experiments will be performed (and so don’t be surprised if, sometimes, test content pops up on the linked website: it means that students are actually working on it, experimenting on their city’s future) and, possibly, be transformed into real-life scenarios.

The event on December 14th has been a wonderful experience and a chance to finally get together with all involved actors to evaluate the results of our efforts.

During the event, a commission composed by Derrick de Kerckhove, Giampiero Gramaglia, Claudio Alfano, Maria Pia Rossignaud and Antonio Irlando experienced the presentations of the projects created by the students, introduced by Oriana Persico and then presented directly by the young innovators. After the presentations the commission evaluated the prototypes produced during the project and assigned an award of distinction to the project which implemented an ubiquitous book dedicated to the ancient “social networks” found in Pompei’s ruins, where people inscribed graffiti messages about their daily life and full of useful information; An augmented reality application allows you to read these graffiti by framing them in your smartphone and, thus, to translate them from latin into your own language, to discover the lives of ancient Pompeians and engage an experiment in atemporality by being able to comment the ancient graffiti and open up a dialogue across time.

All students were awarded a certificate of participation to the project.

We definitely wish to thank the Public Administration of the City of Pompei – and especially Claudio Alfano, the Vice-Mayor of the City of Pompei and Town Councillor for   Technological Innovation, and Mayor Claudio D’Alessio – for embracing with such energetic enthusiasm the vision proposed through this project, and by making us feel so welcome and appreciated in our efforts to discover, together with students and educators, the positive opportunities which the digital future can bring closer to us, and helping us to develop our cities, relations, jobs and environments.

And we sincerely wish to thank the students and professors at the Liceo Socio-pedagogico E. ABOUT THE PROJECT

“UBIQUITOUS POMPEI” is the result of the workshop “the Electronic Man. Ubquitous Writing and Identities”, an experimental laboratory focusing on ubiquitous publishing technologies and methodologies created by FakePress Publishing and Art is Open Source for the project “McLuhan meets Pompei”.

The laboratory took place on November 11th and 12th 2011, engaging 120 students in their 3rd, 4th and 5th year of high school and coming from two schools: the Liceo Socio-Psico Pedagogico E. Pascal and the Istituto Bartolo Longo.

Two days of intensive workshop on ubiquitous publishing: the possibility to transform bodies, architectures, objects and entire cities into novel spaces for publication.

The concepts at the base of the Electronic Man have been used to introduce this complex subject to students using the language of arts and performance, to be able to build together with students accessible cross-media content using Augmented Reality and QRCodes.

To achieve this, we used two open source, free platforms (MACME and NeoReality) produced by FakePress Publishing.

Workshops ended by inviting the students to imagine their own version of the “augmented city”.

The last phase of the project took place over the network: an intense discussion and collaboration process using email and Facebook allowed students to define their project ideas and to design 4 complete ideas working on the concept of augmented cartography, geo-localized social networks and ubiquitous narratives. (the ideas are presented on the project website)

Art is Open Source and FakePress Publishing set-up the technological platforms needed to activate students’ ideas, and transform them into a working prototype of their vision of what Augmented Pompei could be.

Ubiquitous Pompei originates from this process: the platform hosts all 4 designs and the project documentation, including the materials used during the workshops and the software tools used in the process.

Students and teachers have a direct access to the platform, allowing them to autonomously continue the experiments in the evolution of the current ideas or in the creation of new scenarios.

Ubiquitous Publishing in Pompei

Together with the project “McLuhan Meets Pompei“, promoted by the Associazione Amici di Media Duemila ONLUS in collaboration with the City Council for Communication and Technological Innovation of the City of Pompei, the FakePress and Art is Open Source teams have started their education program on augmented reality in two high schools in the city of Pompei (Liceo Scientifico Pascal and Istituto Bartolo Longo).

On November 11th and 12th 2011 two workshops engaged around 100 students on the theme of Ubiquitous Publishing: the possibility to tell new stories and invent new narratives using technologies which allow us to transform any body, architecture, objects and entire cities into spaces for publication.

The workshops were based on the experience of novel practices.

The MACME and NeoReality platforms produced by FakePress have been used to create cross media content, QRCodes and Augmented Reality content, together with students: every one of them will benefit from the availability of a dedicated platform, Ubiquitous Pompei, which will remain at their disposal to enact collaborative processes between students, professors and the city administration.

The workshops ended with a call for action: students were invited to imagine their own version of the “augmented city“.

In a public ceremony on December 14th the institutions will evaluate the proposals and give students a certificate documenting their participation to the project.

The Electronic Man has been selected for exhibit at the Robots and Avatars series of events.

“We are very glad to announce that the following works and projects have been chosen by the Jury to be part of Robots and Avatars.

The Jury has selected a number of works to make up the 3 exhibitions in the Robots and Avatars project. Linked to the differences in each venue, both in space and technical terms, the Jury has decided to present an exhibition that will differ slightly for each venue.

A selection of works will present at FACT, Liverpool (UK) for showing from late March to the end of May 2012; a few to AltArt, Cluj-Napoca (Romania) for presentation in June/July 2012 and KIBLA (Slovenia – as part of Maribor 2012, European Capital of Culture) will take a number of works into their gallery in October 2012.”

This innovative project explores how young people will work and play with new representational forms of themselves and others in virtual and physical life in the next 10-15 years.

A participatory web and events led programme with connected educational activities took place in 2010. The project now continues in the UK and Europe as part of the EU Culture Programme (2007-13). We are open to collaborations and inputs.
