AOS, Art is Open Source is proud to be part of the DE_ZER project by Elisa Giardina Papa, Fabrizio Giardina Papa, Giovanni Salerno and Floriano Lapolla.
DE_ZER Vol. 4

[English Version Below]

www.de-zer.com

The DEberlusconiZER is proud to announce DE_ZER Vol. 4, the fourth of a series of exhibitions in which some contemporary artists are invited to give a new meaning to the informational space “liberated” from the unwieldy presence of the Italian Prime Minister.

After three group shows (DE_ZER Vol. 1, DE_ZER Vol. 2 and DE_ZER Vol. 3), the DEberlusconiZERwill host two solo shows, in order to allow a better understanding of two very peculiar projects: La Merde, by Luca Bolognesi (May 27 – June 5, 2011) and Always on My Mind, by Salvatore Iaconesi (June 6 – June 15, 2011).

Both the works – very different in terms of content and inspiration – challenge the technological and conceptual infrastructure provided by the DEberlusconiZER. Ironically playing with the workings and intentions of the project, Luca Bolognesi chose to refuse submitting any alternative content to the original images and texts. The level interposed between the censored content and the spectator is transparent, images and texts are still the ones the DEberlusconiZER wanted to set us free from. The program becomes a celibatory machine that fails its target. The caption you are reading, with the work’s title and explanation, becomes the only way to identify the work itself. And yet, the title La merde (according to the artist, provided by an online text generator in its French release) proves that Bolognesi’s contribution is far for being nihilistic, defeatist and polemical against the possibilities provided by its host body. Whatever it’s meaning is, and despite its invisibility, La Merde ends up creating a strong, unprecedented association between images.

After Bolognesi’s inexorable void, the DEberlusconiZER will host Iaconesi’s lavish filling. Sneer and scatology can be found as well in Always on My Mind, a work that we are not going to describe here in order to let you enjoy the biting taste of the surprise we had when we first tested it. Save the date: June 6, 2011.

The DEberlusconiZER is a web tool that replaces the images and words related to the Italian Prime Minister. The software subverts the media machine created by one of the most controversial figures in Italian politics by reclaiming the space devoted to him and using it for new porpuses.

The DEberlusconiZER is a project by Elisa Giardina Papa, Fabrizio Giardina Papa, Giovanni Salerno and Floriano Lapolla.

The artists have been selected and invited by art critic Domenico Quaranta.

here is the Press Release:

CAMMOVIE

Video Art Platform

curated by Antonio Manfredi
Opening April 30th, 2011 at 18.30
April 30th | May 30th

CAM, the contemporary arts museum at Casoria, continues its activities with important event dedicated to research and experimentation, presenting CAMMOVIE_Videoart Platform, curated by Antonio Manfredi, starting on April 30th 2011, from 18.30, up to May 30th.

The event is at its second edition and it is a true multimedia container, for videoart coming from all over the world, offering the opportunity to confront the sea of information featured in the virtual worlds by using digital tools.

This year’s CAMMOVIE edition features 4 sections and 1 performance: FOCUS REVOLUTION, TOXIC, GLANCES_AROUND DUMP, MAGMART and the artistic action of REFF, a fake cultural institution.

CAM supports an innovative idea art as a form of information, and the section FOCUS REVOLUTION follows the trail of the latest political events showing videos by egyptian artist Mohamed Alaa and the visual documentation of the Egyptian uprising that caused the fall of the regime and the rise of the revolutionary movements, whose wind of self-determination is shaking and turning upside down the scenarios of North African dictatorships.

Sandro Joyeux‘s voice will form a soundtrack for the event, using african songs and musicalities.

Joy and color bringing back to the roots of a population that is now fighting and claiming their fundamental rights.

The TOXIC section is an open door onto the world of oriental video art and on its enormous production, fetching content from the Internet and bringing together with the images of Japan’s nuclear disaster.

The vision of the poetics of artists are placed side by side with the despair of a population: videos of japanese artists are used as a visual translation of human ambivalence, able of spiritual heights and simultaneous superficiality and civil inconscience.

During the opening night, the electronic sounds of Avant-Garde will form an ensemble with the images. Music will follow the forms on the screens, reaching an oniric, dreamlike state.

CAMMOVIE will then move forward and shift from international themes to the local issues with the GLANCES_AROUND DUMP, assessing the problems of the green spaces of the Metropolitan Parc of Naples’ hills. While conserving nature and being a florid area and providing a powerful green lung for the city, this area has been chosen as the site in which the waste dump of Chiaiano will be built. The sequence of images of the high tuff walls of its cave, where the main dump will be built, caught in the photos by Camillo Ripaldi, will enlighten the representation of the location and will comment in a positive ways the scenarios of death odors which the population will be facing, almost as a joyful last farewell to a naturally enchanted place.

The last section of the event will confirm Casoria Museum’s partnership, for the 6th consecutive year, with the outstanding MAGMART_video under volcano festival. After careful selection among the 450 videos sent from 45 countries around the world, the jury composed by Abir Boukhari (curator | AllArtNow), Agata Chiusano (artist, professor | Università Suor Orsola Benincasa), Giuseppe De Marco (artist | Mediavox), Luca Magnoni (journalist, communication and multimedia expert | Hydrogen Lab), Antonio Manfredi (artist, curator | Direttore Artistico del CAM), Enrico Tomaselli (artist, curator | Direttore Artistico del Festival), proclaimed the 30 winners that will enter the CAM’s permanent collection, and that will be on show during CAMMOVIE.

Furthermore, the CAMMOVIE format, created by CAM, will take the chance to express its deep interest in the new languages of virtuality through the performance of REFF, the Fake Institution which, with performers Oriana Persico and Salvatore Iaconesi, will show the new possibilities of Augmented Reality.

Through the ironic and provocative distribution of an augmented reality drug, REFF uses QRCodes and Augmented Reality Fiducial Markers to catch the trend according to which internet is leaving the dimensions of virtuality, moving out of an intangible world to enter the physical one. Interactivity and discovery are at the base of the artistic action presented at the Casoria Museum, proposing innovative languages and art narratives that are yet undisclosed.

FakePress and Art is Open Source will be at transmediale in a few days presenting CoS, Consciousness of Streams, a cognitive virus on the event and a cross-medial, emergent, publication.

CoS Consciousness of Streams

In just a few days we will be at transmediale in Berlin, to create CoS: Consciousness of Streams!

CoS will be something that we’re calling a cognitive virus on the festival, as it will be a cross-medial, emergent, performative, multi-author publication created by processing the festival itself: what goes on, how people move and feel, what people do at workshops, their ideas, connections and expressions.

The definition of CoS went through various stages and we defined it the way you will see it at transmediale by transforming the initial proposal to harmonize it with the rest of the event, to what will be going on in the other spaces and, last but not least, with budget constraints :)

For download (PDF): CoS Consciousness of Streams Proposal, first version

The second version of the proposal describes what you will actually find at transmediale:

For download (PDF): CoS Consciousness of Streams Proposal, second version

For download (PDF): CoS Consciousness of Streams Proposal, notes to the slides of the second version

From the concept:

“Far from the image of Rodin’s Thinker, the contemporary world definitely abandons the idea of an isolated human, forming thought, ideas, concepts and shapes by isolation, contemplation. “Cogito, ergo sum”, yes, but thinking becomes a very different practice in respect to what had been envisioned by Descartes, transforming the ideas of contemplation, attention, conception, cognition : influencing and open-sourcing them to a series of additional channels and challenges which are enabled by the extension of our bodies and sensory systems through digital technologies.
Multiple sources, different timescales, contemporaneous, asynchronous, overlapping sources, interleaved attention spans that leave linearity behind in favor of networkedness; unconscious becomes predominant; an informant sound forms from the mutual suggestions that all information samples provide along a polyphonic multidirectional timeline in which interference, difference and noise are possibly the most important things to take into account.
Harmony/linearity leaves the stage, enters noise/nonlinearity, deconstruction, emergency and ubiquitousness. Multiple realities overlap, possibly denying each other and forming a neo-reality, that is browsable, filterable, mixable, mash-up-able, sharable, confrontable, storable, morphable, synthesizable, aggregatable.
Cognitive spaces form around fake, unverifiable, temporary bits of information whizzing by, at incredible speeds, clustering and disassembling along complex emergent patterns: multiple, anonymous, collective.
Connect the dots: each emerging shape is different and unrelated, yet it is the explicit expression of the same voices involved.
Time disappears replaced by immaterial places for our traversal: immediatcy; near-past; short time-spans; multiple time scanning; global timezones; recurring times; loops; feedbacks.”

CoS observes the novel condition of networked humanity, definitively suspended in a condition of continuous-present and delegating the ideas and perceptions of past and future to external mechanisms and devices.

CoS Consciousness of Streams - general architecture

The main idea of CoS is to create an additional, interpretative, layer of reality, to stratify it on top of the festival and to provide collaborative access to it to everyone (present, remote, connected… ), thus multiplying the voices and expressions defining the many versions of reality which we all experience.

From the concept:

“The immersion in the global stream of consciousness forming the current cognitive scape can be seen as an emersion. Dive right through media and emerge from the other side, in a reality that completely changes.
COS, Consciousness of Streams, is a complex yet natural initiative imagining the explosion of our human condition into an observable form.
COS is an environment, a series of networked workshops, a performative practice, an observation/representation methodology, and a second order cybernetic system resulting in an open-ended, on-going, multi-author, emergent, ubiquitous publication.
COS aims at disarticulating the practices of human beings and reassembling them from vantage points for expression and investigation: Identity, Time, Emotion, Place.
Each vantage point is a multidirectional observer: COS uses interfaces and interactions to observe individuals who, in turn, observe COS to form their physical and emotional state.
COS produces and analyzes streams: as a series of matrioskas, the environment is embedded into its container, and into the physical, digital and hybrid realities. The vantage points can be used to explore any level of this containment/intersectional hierarchy and, in turn, are affected by the whole system and by its
individual components.
COS, Consciousness of Streams, hosts the streams of consciousness of the people traversing it or attending its workshops as well as the ones of the global population of the social networks: in, out, in-between, in time, space, relations, difference.
COS is formed by poles focused on the vantage points and implementing interactions that guide individuals through a unique experience through a disassembled reality.
COS gathers all these experiences, and the ones of the people online and transforms them into information, expressing them through practice (the workshops), representation (the cross-medial environment) and performance (the collaborative/performative parts of the workshops).
COS expresses and then observes itself: the technological system embedded in various ways along the whole of COS aim at creating an ongoing experience.
A CMS (Content Management System) uses COS to produce an innovative form of publication, whose process does not end with the event: an open-ended, ubiquitous, multi-author, emergent, augmented reality, cross-medial publication that can be printed, interacted with, used through a location based system and by an augmented reality system: layered over the world and its stratified reality, in a continuous stream.”

CoS is a performative artwork that assumes the form of an interactive framework. The performance will be on-going, meaning that it will still be accessible after the festival, transforming it into a real, open, usable environment.

The technology used and created for CoS will also be accessible, under the forms of OpenSource APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) available to create additional functionalities for CoS, and as the framework itself, released under a GPL3 license right after the festival.

Everything happening at CoS will be part of the project/performance: the workshops, interactions, connections, expressions. Everything that people, present or remote, will decide to share will be included in the publication/environment, thus opening up the space and making it accessible, usable and reinventable.

meeting on a rainy but beautiful evening, we gathered at the Libreria Flexi in the heart of the city of Rome. After a short discussion making sure that everyone knew what we were doing, we headed out into the city and put the first augmented reality, tagged, disseminated exhibition of REFF’s artists.

REFF Remix the world, reinvent reality photos by Shoot4Change

Together with us organizing everything were the fantastic Shoot4Change crew, taking care of cristallizing through pictures the invasion of the city, the Hub Roma, helping us to create a convergence of innovators, creatives, designers and artists wishing to experiment new forms of expression and communication.

Also with us was Massimo Canevacci: back from Brasil where he is now teaching and remixing himself quite a lot, our friend, companion and inspiration introduced us to the ideas of Design eXpanso, describing the scenarios in which any act of expression and communication becomes an act that is disseminated through time and space, invading the contemporary metropolis with information and using ubiquitous technologies and nomadic practices.

We were more than happy to subscribe to Canevacci’s visualization of this new form of design (and politics, and anthropology, and communication, and poetics, and…) and started our invasion of the city, happily expressing our views on the world.

Some pictures of the event here on Art is Open Source, more on the Shoot 4 Change website, and soon the video coverage of our master videomaker and dear friend Gianmarco Bonavolontà.

Thanks to everyone that came and to everyone that didn’t come but was with us with attitude and emotion.

[PRESS RELEASE - ENGLISH ]

Almost two years after its creation il 2009, the REFF – RomaEuropa FakeFactory is back with the publication of its book, published in Italy by DeriveApprodi & FakePress:

REFF
The reinvention of the real through critical practices
of remix, mash-up, re-contextualization, reenactment

Foreword by: Bruce Sterling

Over 30 contributions ranging from critical articles to interviews; a catalog of 30 works exploring the themes of remix in an extended way; the special mentions of the 2009-2010 contest; a new experience of reading integrating the digital and paper dimentions trough the use of Augmented Reality and tagging; an open source tool for creating ubiquitous, cross-media publications, by FakePress.

From the foreword, by Bruce Sterling:

“Right now, the behaviors and activities commemorated in this book are bizarre. Very. They are so peculiar that they are inherently difficult to describe, because they come from the outer reaches of an emergent network-culture.
I could write an entire book about these ideas and practices, a book that would be science fiction, architecture fiction, design fiction, a technical manual and also a manifesto for network economics. That book would be rather like this book, only less entertaining.”

REFF. An example of an artistic, cultural and political act. A truly Augmented Reality, a multi-strata object that entices to be discovered, read and used with more “sense” up to the performative one. A new prototype of publication, beyond the e-book.

The paper and presentation describe a research process focused on the scientific research, design and implementation of wearable devices able to display human emotions – be them individual, group or global – on physical bodies.
The devices created in the process have been used to create 3 artistic performances as both proofs of concepts and as innovative forms of artistic and aesthetic expression: Talkers performance, OneAvatar and Conference Biofeedback.
