a workshop for designers explaining how to imagine, design, build and market smartphone and tablet based cross media applications, including a full exampe and ideas on how to use these technologies in critical, sustainable ways

On March 21st 2011, Art is Open Source held a lesson at ISIA Florence on the theme:

ISIA Florence Logo

“Cross Media design scenarios: smartphones and tablets”

The workshop engaged the problems, approaches, methodologies and processes that designers can use in imagining, designing and implementing cross media design products.
Some energies were used to describe really interesting scenarios that allow using cross media design to implement solutions that are useful not only for business, but also for society, the environment and the cultural ecosystem, promoting a more tolerant, multicultural, sustainable take on the world.
These are the slides that have been used in the workshop, complete with a full end-to-end example of the creation of a location based application for iPhone/iPad.

We will be at the DULP 2009 meeting at the Tor Vergata University on September 14th and 15th, 2009, to present FakePress and, specifically Ubiquitous Anthropology (presented by Luca Simeone) and Saperi p2p (presented by Salvatore Iaconesi).

The DULP is an international meeting focused on innovative approaches to learning and education practices: Design Inspired Learning, Ubiquitous Learning, Liquid Learning Places, Person in Place Centered Design. Mobile technologies, cultural ecosystems, design applied to learning and culture will be among the main subjects for discussion among the many international researchers that will contribute to the event.

We will present two projects of our FakePress cross-media publishing house:

ubiquitous anthropology

Ubiquitous Anthropology, using mobile applications with a location based approach to create a narrative environment through which anthropologists will be able to represent the multiplicity of voices that are present in their ethnographic observations, thus building interactive, polyphonic, multiauthor narratives;

saperi p2p

Saperi p2p is a mobile-enabled digital ecosystem that allows for ubiquitous collaboration among research projects. Usable through web and iPhone, it allows for the creation of research teams (or education, or professional, or any other kind…) that can collaborate cross-medially: places, times, contents, communication… the p2p system allows for a realtime connection between the participants. It is like a hyperlocal social network that can be used to create a digital context for collaborative groups. Groups can be connected, forming operative, p2p onthologies that allow for knowledge sharing and multidisciplinary approaches to culture and science.

Salvatore Iaconesi and Luca Simeone will present the projects for FakePress, and will provide a demo platform throuh which you will be able to try the systems out.

The world is not built out of a single point of view, or out of a single voice. It is the result of a continuous interaction among different people, places, objects, architectures, information.

visual narratives and explorations in anthropology

A continuous flow of perspectives, voices, desires and emotions creates a poliphonic form of expression that goes well beyond written language, creating an experience that is closer to the world we live in.

AC is a simple actionscript interface that will be used as a starting point in a series of developments.

The first one simply grabs pictures about “anthropology” in real time from flickr.com, displaying them in a mobile, variable, multi-author visual composition that aims to create a visionary stream of consciousness of the multitude of people involved. A chaotic, suggestive, emotional, harmonic-and-dissonant narrative.

click here to open: AC, Antropologia Culturale

In the next steps, this form of narration will be expanded to define a world-medium that will be used to build a digital layer of reality that you will be able to experience in physical space, trough mobile phones and other handheld and wearable devices. A narrative augmented reality and a new form of publishing.

Stay tuned. :)
