REFF RomaEuropa FakeFactory, Reality Pushers

The main objective of the cycle of events is to confront with the contemporary issues of art systems and to investigate case studies and specific experiences. The meetings and conferences aim to promote a reflection on the mechanisms of contemporary art and cultural systems, to develop economies and social engagement.

In this Framework, the technological lab sees the direct intervention of artists, performers and experts narrating significant case studies and approaches which have been proven successful and meaningful. Talks will mix with workshops, while the presenters demonstrate both their methodological and conceptual approach, and explain the usage scenarios of technologies, frameworks and techniques.

REFF, RomaEuropa FakeFactory, has been invited to the session that will be held on October 27th at the Centro Culturale Trevi to present and discuss the innovative scenario created during the story of the project.

Specifically, REFF will present:

• the concept of meta-brand as a framework for innovation in cultural practices, and for the creation of pragmatic opportunities for artists, researchers and cultural operators
• the idea of the “fake institution” which was used by REFF to create a globally active cultural ecosystem dedicated to the practices of collaboration and radical innovation in art practice and cultural policies
• the methodological “reinvention of reality”, a novel approach through which technologies, networks and ubiquitous publishing tools have been used to create artworks, performances, initiatives, collaborations and research projects whose main goal was to “augment reality” by enacting new operative spaces promoting freedom of expression, freedom of innovation and a wide range of innovative scenarios creating opportunities for all parties involved

The Opening of the exhibit took place in a wonderful atmosphere. We were happy to see new and old people interested in the fake institution, its education program and its newly created Augmented Reality Drug.

We managed to present the AR Drug, the molecules which are used to create it, the education program on the systematic reinvention of reality and the new technologies and practices for critical invasion of our cities, that will probably be used sometime soon :)

We have to thank everyone involved in the exhibit because it was amazing: all of Furtherfield, Garrett Lynch, xname, Rebar Group, all the photographers and video makers, and then Richard Barbrook, Quayola, David Benqué everyone!

At the exhibit we introduced REFF’s AR Drug, and the three molecules that are used to make it:

REMIXine:

REMIXine

“The REMIXine compound is an innovative molecule and it is a fundamental ingredient of all our drugs. The molecule powerfully reacts with other ones, disconnecting their predetermined bonds and allowing the core elements of other compounds to reassemble, forming entirely new ones, in complete freedom. REMIXine is known to augment the total entropy of systems, and it is a known stimulator of creative processes and on the systematic creation of insights on the world.”

REALITene:

REALITene

“REALITene is a very unstable compound. Its complex molecule self-arranges into virtually infinite configurations. Furthermore, different patients have been known to react to different molecule configurations at different times in their clinical life. All these factors make REALITene a compound that is really hard to manage. Our drugs confront with this problem in a radical way: REALITene’s configuration is not determined in the lab, but is left to the shaping processes enacted by the patient and its surrounding context.”

REINVENTum:

REINVENTum

“REINVENTum compounds collaborate with the other molecules found in our drugs to reassemble components into new forms once their bonds have been disassembled. REINVENTum has drastic effects on the equilibrium of neural ecosystems, as it is able to effectively activate the neurotransmitters which control human forms of expression: this action has profound impacts on the areas of the brain that engage language and memory, allowing the rapid formation of entire networks of new symbols.”

We also introduced the global map of everything’s that happening in the world with our fake institution

And we publicly and officially released the MACME plugin for cross-medial, augmented reality publishing, part of REFF’s education program on the systematic reinvention of reality.

The theme of the workshop was the reinvention of reality through critical practices and ubiquitous technologies.
During the workshop a short history of the REFF project was narrtes, quickly followed by a hands-on session in which the cross-media publishing tools released by FakePress under a GPL3 license have been installed and tested out:

REFF with Furtherfield at Resonance FM

Today we have been at Goldsmiths University to perform a workshop on the REFF project and to present the free tools that FakePress has been distributing during the last few months:

MACME: a cross-media publishing system that enables WordPress blogs to publish content using location based media, QRCodes and Augmented Reality, generating not only the markers needed to disseminate multimedia content on spaces, objects and bodies, but also PDFs and ePub formatted ebooks.

KNOWNERS: a WordPress plugin that transforms a blog into a knowledge visualization and sharing system

BLUETOOTH WARS: a live Linux distro that turns a laptop into a mobile multimedia broadcasting station that can be used to invade entire cities with contents and information

All these projects will be released in just a few days: stay tuned for updates.

REFF logo, RomaEuropa FakeFactory

RomaEuropa Web Factory‘s second edition is about to start up.

REFF attended the press conference held at the Opificio Telecom in Rome, on Wednsday September 16h 2009, to check out the informations that were being diffused on the web about the innovations of this year’s edition of the Fondazione Romaeuropa‘s networked competition.

While watching the press conference, it seemed as if we were looking in the mirror. Because RomaEuropa WebFactory 2009/2010 edition is actually indistinguishable from last year’s RomaEuropa FakeFactory!

• Open licenses.
  
• The works are remixes of existing ones.
  
• Democratic voting.
  
• Experts and academics evaluating the submitted works through their reviews

All of these things are going to be included in this year’s RomaEuropa WebFactory, whose structure, thus, becomes indistinguishable from the FakeFactory!

And there’s more.

Beatpick. Beatpick is part of REFF, and they are the main partner form the music section (100Samples). Beatpick has been called to manage RomaEuropa WebFactory’s music section for this year’s competition.

Summing up: same rules, open lincenses adoption, same practices, and even our main music partner handling the music section.

We think that this is a great victory.

RomaEuropa WebFactory adopted all of the instances suggested by REFF’s critique. And we’re happy about it.

And we even got proper credit for the effectiveness of our action: REFF was mentioned multiple times during the press conference as the main factor bringing on this year’s change.

It’s not over, yet.

REFF project goes on by producing about 3 minor events by the end of the year, with one to present the publication that includes the academic productions of our scientific committee.

And then, in 2010, we’ll have an enormous initiative. But we’ll leave it as a little suspence for the next few days. :)

REFF, RomaEuropaFAKEFactory, was presented at the Italian senate through an intense series of panels dealing with art/culture/creativity in the contemporary era, with the issues of cultural politics from the points of view of institutions and cultural operators, with the possibility for the enactment of innovative business and legal models for art, creativity and culture. the conference launch the proposal of a digital table of discussion with the Senator & vice president of the Cultural Commission Vincenzo Vita, who hosted the event.

In a wonderful collaboration with the Rejected collective, REFF, RomaEuropaFAKEFactory, arrives at the third part of its traversal of the contemporary metropolis, with REFF.jected, a party themed on the “remixing people” attitude. Bodies-desires-sexualities-..aesthetics-faces-ideas are remixed by accessing Rome’s underground attitudes and mindsets: Djs. Vjs, Liv acts, dance floors, installations, performances promoting happiness.

In splendida collaborazione con il collettivo Rejected, REFF, RomaEuropaFAKEFactory, arriva alla terza parte dei suoi attraversamenti nella metropoli contemporanea, con REFF.jected; un party con l’attitudine “remixing people”. Orson Welles is one of the most influential artists of the contemporary era, touching the domains of cinema, theatre, fiction, radio in a continuous research that trespasses the borders between art, communication, psychology, performance.
His works gave us the chance to perceive art’s transformation, in a form in which art and falsificaion are divided by boundaries that are ethereal and fluid, eventually overlaying and touching.

Orson Welles’ “the War of the Worlds” radio performance was rejected by the RomaWuropa Web Factory competition.

“This is not original work!” was the scream of the Jury.
