Atlas of Rome @ Festa dell’Architettura, Index Urbis, Rome

Art is Open Source and Fake Press will be presenting an enormous interactive infoaesthetic environment at the Festa dell’Architettura of Rome, from the 9th to 12th of June 2010.

The interactive environment is named “Atlante di Roma” (Atlas of Rome) and it is an instance of a wider project which will be launched online on the website http://www.atlantedellevisioni.net . The project is curated by Paolo Valente, who practically made everything possible. The Atlas has another component which is called ABC Roma by Giuseppe Stampone.

The idea is to create a display/interact environment that is able to let people experience multiple views on the city they live in or that they’re visiting, and to research and investigate on the visions that architects, artists, institutions and, in general, other people have had on urban spaces, through projects, actions, competitions, events, works, performances, research, institutional or political actions.

The system will be open to anyone and is designed to be reused, reshown and re-shared multiple times.

The environment is built from multiple components:

a 35 meters wide projection composed through 8 collaborating servers processing in realtime the interactions coming from the Atlas

on the projection 4 interactive infoaesthetic representations show the visions hosted in the Atlas and the interactions of the individuals choosing to be part of the experience:

Linearity

Linearity

In Linearity the visions take the form of mechanisms grabbing their life energy from the interactions among individuals and themes. Spheres represent visions and, while moving, they are constantly fed from the themes that they explore.

NeoMap

NeoMap

Neo Map explores territories bypassing their geophysical or toponomastic characteristics, and describes them theough the projects, actions and the lives that exist in them. In the visualization circles represent the visions, dislocated according to their reciprocal geographical locations and connected by subjects, thus creating a new visually semantic geography.

Bridges

Bridges

Bridges explores interconnections. Visions orbit around the respective themes, in a cyclic procession. Visions and themes dynamically show bridges and interconnections, according to he subjects and actions that they share.

TimeScape

TimeScape

Timescape transforms the passage of time into a landscape. Visions are represented in their time dimension, occupying spaces that are proportional to their duration and sequence. A geography defined through time and correlation is made visible and interactable.

The sounds populating all of the visualizations are completely generated by the contents, interactions and from the emerging data, inferring new relationships among people and projects and representing them in sounds.

4 multitouch screens will allow people to interact with the environment, controlling interfaces that will materialize directly onto the large projection.

Squatting Supermarkets @ Mondovì

Squatting Supermarkets at Mondovì

On Friday May 5th 2010 Art is Open Source , FakePress and The Hub Roma will be in Mondovì together with the Piemonte Share Festival and associazione Marcovaldo to present the next steps of the Squatting Supermarkets / iSee project.

Squatting Supermarkets is one of the projects included in the SMIR (Spazi Multimediali per l’Innovazione e la Ricerca / Multimiedia Spaces for Innovation and Research) project, an european project inolving the restoration of two ancient churches in Mondovì (Italy) and Embrun (France) to create a trans-frontier media research center that will investigate on the possibilities for digital arts to collaborate with the development of territories and populations.

We (as AOS and FakePress) are investing a lot on this project, as we feel that arts and social innovation go well together hand in hand in exploring new practices for a more sustainable world.

And we are not alone in this. The Sharing (the association behind the Piemonte Share Festival) and Marcovaldo (an association with a long history of territorial interventions promoting development, the arts, local economies and creativity) have been truly active, lately, on our involvement wih Squatting Supermarkets, and they are setting up an ecosystem of local producers that will form a first official experimentation base for the adoption of the practices designed with iSee / Squatting Supermarkets.

During the next few months we will add a layer of digital reality to the wonderful traditional cheeses, wines, vegetables, salamis and meats, through which producers will be able to inform people about their sustainable production and distribution processes, and people will be able to gather information on what it means for them and for the rest of world to consume critically, accessing informations, documentaries, global sources of information. Finally the products we eat and consume every day will have a story: we will be able to know who produce them, where, how and with what effects on our world. And we will be able to communicate with them and among ourselves, near and far, directly throgh the products that shape our daily lives.

So, we are really excited to get this part of the project going!

And “We” is growing by the minute, as you can read here about the recent collaborations with our friends and partners at The Hub Roma, the research group at the Tor Vergata University in Rome, the students that will produce end-of-course project works on Squatting Supermarkets and iSee at La Sapienza University in Rome. And there will be additions by the minute.

In Mondovì we will present a research poster (you can download the PDF of the poster here) that describes the current state of the research (titled “the Active Consumer“) and the planning we have set up for the next important date for Squatting Supermarkets, around the half of July 2010, back in Mondovì for the next steps of the project and a beautiful event in the medieval city square together with all the artists and initiatives of the SMIR project.

In Mondovì we will also present the new features of the iSee application for iPhone / Android that is at the heart of Squatting Supermarkets, including a new information visualization technology that will be released as Open Source.

So, as usual: stay tuned!

please register at the Facebook Event if you’d like to inform us that you’re coming, and if you want to stay updated on the event:

Holophonics & Design

HOLO - an AU plugin for holophonics & a social networking project

HOLO - an AU plugin for holophonics & a social networking project

FakePress and Ossigeno

in collaboration with

the course on “Multimedia Technologies and Communications Experimentations” at the Faculty of Architecture “Ludovico Quaroni” – La Sapienza, Università di Roma, Department of Industrial Design

are happy to invite you to the lecture:

HOLO

Possible trajectories for the experience of holophonic listening
Who: Marco Fagotti (guest relator) and Salvatore Iaconesi (visiting professor)
What: lecture/workshop
Where: Faculty of Architecture “Ludovico Quaroni, Via E. Gianturco 2 (Rome, Italy) – room G 11
When: April 30th 2010 – 9am – 2pm

Holophony is a specific sound recording and diffusion technique  that reconstructs the experience of three-dimensional listening through the use of special microphones, algorithms and headphones. In practice, it allows the listener to perceive the origin of sounds coming from any point in space.

The possibility to use headphones as privileged fruition devices to hear music, sounds and voices, and the possibility to replicate analogue processes through digital algorithms seems an ideal territory to embrace 3D production, The implications concern not only technical and technological aspects, but a deep re-evaluation of the approach to music and to the knowledge of sound as a cognitive and communicative entity.

April 30th, from 9am to 2pm, at the Interaction Design laboratory held at the course on “Multimedia Technologies and Communications Experimentations” at the Faculty of Architecture “Ludovico Quaroni” – La Sapienza, Università di Roma, Department of Industrial Design by FakePress, will explore the territories of holophonic listening with Marco Fagotti, guest Lecturer for the event. Salvatore Iaconesi, visiting professor at the course, will illustrate the fundamental technologies and methodologies that can be used to design digital sound spatial positioning with the techniques of holophony.

The technologies will be used in the next few days to complete the production of an AU plugin (AU is a standard for plugin development used in most professional audio softwares) that will be distributed to enable for the synthetic creation of complete holophonic sound environments.
The research on Head Transfer Functions (those functions allowing to describe and reenact the diffusion of sounds from the environments to ur head and ears) will be presented.

Holophony will be discussed as a novel possibility for artistic and social interaction, with the ability to potentially fill the world with alternative, realistically spatialized soundscapes, imagined as an opportunity for augmented reality, for social and/or subjectivized reinvention of public/private spaces, on the possibilities for self-expression, knowledge sharing, entertainment and new sensorialities.

The students of the course will be invited to use the theories of holophonics to design innovative systems using these techniques in social, educational and entertainment scenarios: what is an holophonic social network like? Or a distributed, disseminated cinema? Or an holophonic tourist guide? Or a holophonic concert?

The results of their designs will be presented as project works for the end-of-year Open Day, in which all the projects will be presented, both at the University and in a selection of international events.
