Ubiquitous Commons will be at the STARTS Symposium in Brussels, on June 22-23 2015.

Promoted by ICT Art Connect, STARTS begins to explore opportunities for piloting cross-sectorial collaboration to enhance and promote innovation. To foster such collaboration, the European Commission is launching its STARTS –S&T&ARTS programme.

In the STARTS symposium, we will explore the catalytic role of the Arts for innovation in business, industry and society and how to foster it. Possible synergies will be analyzed from an entrepreneurial, technological, scientific, social, and artistic angle. Already existing collaboration of S&T with the Arts in European Commission funded projects will be particularly highlighted.

Near Future Design and Ubiquitous Commons at Wired NextFest

Join us in Milan for Wired’s NextFest.

Art is Open Source, Nefula and Ubiquitous Commons will be there for an exploration on the implications of technologies and networks on our near-future lives.

On May 24th at 10:30 in the Giardini Porta Venezia Nefula will hold a Near Future Design workshop. This 6 hours long, hands-on, full immersion workshop will allow all the participants to move through the tensions and conflicts of the present, to imagine and design possibilistic future concepts, which will be designed as complex transmedia narratives.

The workshop will be held by Nefula’s Oriana Persico, Salvatore Iaconesi, Tommaso Cappelletti, Alice Meniconi and Mirko Balducci.

On May 23rd at 11:30 at the WNF Audi Dome we will hold a talk and conversation about the Ubiquitous Commons: the commons in the era of ubiquitous technologies.

We will present the Ubiquitous Commons project, introduce the technological and legal toolkits which we are preparing, together with a wide network of researchers, lawyers, hackers, institutions and organizations, to re-appropriate our data and create positive, constructive processes for its sharing and common management.

This will be a talk, but also (and most important) a conversation. Everyone is invited to browse through the documentation and information about the Ubiquitous Commons, and to participate actively to the conversation.

Ubiquitous Commons at Cyber Resistance, in Milan

Time again for Cyber Resistance at Il Cantiere in Milan, in April 10-11 2015.

This year we will talk about the Ubquitous Commons: how to claim back your data from online services, and decide how it should be used.

The Ubiquitous Commons is an international research effort dedicated to understanding the transformation of data, information and knowledge in the age of ubiquitous technologies.

It is creating a legal and technological toolkit which will allow people to claim back the information which they constantly and ubiquitously generate during their daily lives through social networks, online services and network-connected devices, and to decide how this data should be used.

During Cyber Resistance we will present a first concept prototype of the Ubiquitous Commons, under the form of a browser plugin which allows you to encrypt your data online, and to use the BlockChain to define licenses for it.

Incautious Porn at SSN2014 in Barcelona

We’ll be attending SSN2014 (the 6th Biannual Surveillance and Society Conference) in Barcelona to present the outcomes of our Incautious Porn project: an anthropological experiment in blackmail and the perception of private/public space online.

Contemporary surveillance is characterised by ambiguities and asymmetries. Surveillance results from different desires and rationales: control, governance, security, profit, efficiency but also care, empowerment, resistance and play. Surveillance is never neutral. Surveillance is always about power and that power is increasingly asymmetric. Surveillance practices are also changing and as ‘smart’ surveillance systems proliferate utilising and generating ‘Big Data’ new forms of ambiguity and asymmetry arise.

Incautious Porn, an anthropological experiment in blackmail and the perception of private/public space online

 

“We have radically changed our perception of what is public and what is private.

 

While using social networks, search engines and websites determining who has access to our information, our personal details, our habits and preferences is often complex or not easily accessible.

 

Each person‘s information is sold hundreds of times each day, while surfing websites and social media sites, with information passing from one provider to the other in ways that are subtle and non-transparent: data collected on one site may be used on other sited to sell us advertisements or to investigate on our lives.

 

On top of that, most people tend to interpret social media sites as new forms of public spaces, and it is fundamental for service providers‘ strategies that this perception is maintained, to promote our full disclosure, allowing them to collect even more data about ourselves.

 

We used the project Incautious Porn to investigate on this scenario, to explore the shifting and blurring of the boundaries of what we perceive as our privacy and as our private and public spaces.

 

Incautious Porn uses the operations of a fake company systematically invading our privacy (even to the point of performing simulated forms of blackmail) to collect enormous amounts of information which we have used to analyze this scenario.

 

In Incautious Porn art acts both as a sensor on the transformation of human societies and as a tool for analyzing its effects.

 

The effects of the Incautious Porn project and communication campaign have been massive, bringing it to the attention of a large, global, audience and, thus, allowing the research team to benefit from a large data set.

 

Furthermore, the actions of the blackmailing fake-company have been led using an ethical approach: no money was taken from people, and all their personal data has been preserved, also using the initiative as a testing lab for novel privacy and security preservation techniques, and as a campaign for awareness about the transformation of people‘s perception of contemporary private/public spaces.”
