How To Use Social Media Monitoring Tools For Outreach Marketing

Social media is all about engagement. Because of this, it is the perfect tool for outreach marketing efforts. Outreach marketing is the practice of seeking out individuals or organizations that have a shared interest in what you or your company has to offer. Sometimes, it is used in conjunction with direct sales, but often times it is used for more larger goals such as branding.

Generally speaking, when planning an outreach marketing campaign online there are two main areas that are important to define before you begin; your target audience, and your method of engagement. Picking the right audience is vital to successful outreach marketing. Engagement is at the core of  outreach marketing, the right type of engagement can make or break a campaign.

Defining keywords & audiences

When using social media monitoring tools for any marketing effort choosing the right keywords is an important step. When using social media monitoring tools to aid outreach marketing, choosing your keywords and targeting the right audience goes hand in hand. I like to break my keywords down into two sets, primary keywords and secondary keywords.

Primary keywords are terms that are directly related to the industry that you are in. For example, if you sell cat food, then you would use “cat food” as a primary keyword. You can expand on primary keywords by adding adjectives, such as, “dry cat food”, or “canned cat food”.

When choosing primary keywords, remember not to use your specific brand name. The point of outreach marketing is to target users that have never heard of your company before. Primary keywords are vital to finding the broadest base of audience. However, if you operate in a large ambiguous market, then you may need to refine your monitoring with secondary keywords.

Secondary keywords are still related to your market, but may not include your exact product descriptions. Back to the cat food example – you might want to refine your monitoring to “hungry cat” or “feeding the cats”. Using secondary keywords are useful at targeting your audience.

Engagement strategies

Targeting your audience with the right keywords is only half the battle. Now, we need to find an effective strategy for engaging each user. Responding to users with, “Hey awesome! You like cat food? Visit our web site!” isn’t going to cut it. Proper engagement needs to contain either one of two things a “click” factor or a “response” factor.

A click factor is an incentive for the user to click through a link. Some click factors might be pointing the user to a specific product that could solve a problem. “Oh whats that your kitty is overweight? Try some of our diet cat food.” Another click factor is combining contest marketing with your response. “Tired of buying cat food? Enter our contest to win a year supply!”

A response factor is an incentive for the user to respond and engage in dialog. This strategy is perfect for putting a personal touch on a brand. One of the easiest ways that you can utilize a response factor is to ask a question. “Whats your cat’s favorite thing to eat?” Utilizing the response factor is perfect for branding; however, it can require more time and engagement because the goal is having a valued dialog.

When executing outreach marketing in social media, social media monitoring tools can be very helpful. Defining your target audience and keywords is the first step. Breaking your keywords down into primary and secondary keywords can help refine and target your audience. Developing a strategy for engagement is vital. Combining both “click” and “response” incentives are important when engaging. So the next time you are looking for a new branding or buzz building strategy, consider combining outreach marketing with social media monitoring tools.

ONE COMMENT ON How To Use Social Media Monitoring Tools For Outreach Marketing

C. Lobo – Internet Exposure,

Joe, thanks for the tips on breaking keywords up into two categories. Do you think it is valuable to respond to social media users who are talking specifically about your brand?

If so, what type of message would you send? A simple thank you for the mention? Or do you think it’s wise to upsell them? For instance, direct them to your website to check out other products. Just wondering where you think the boundary lays.

I wrote a roundup a couple of days ago about free tools for social media monitoring, as well

http://www.iexposure.com/2010/08/31/9-free-tools-for-social-brand-monitoring

Have you found any value in these free tools or do you use paid software?

Thanks!

Advanced Columns w/ CSS

I recently developed a site for a client who requested their product listings be displayed similar to how Johnny Cupcakes (Street wear brand from Boston/Los Angeles) lays out their products (columns laid out in a zig zag pattern). My first instinct was to split each section into its own list, but since this site was running on a CMS, all products had to be spit out in one giant list.

Input Director

About Input Director

Input Director is a Windows application that lets you control multiple Windows systems using the keyboard/mouse attached to one computer. It is designed for folks who have two (or more) computers set up at home and find themselves regularly sliding from one system to the other (and wearing out the carpet in the process!). With Input Director, you can share a single keyboard/mouse across a set of systems. You switch which system receives the input either by hotkey or by moving the cursor so that it transitions from one screen to the other (in a very similar fashion to a multi-monitor setup). The idea being that you can position the monitors from two or more systems in a row and use a shared keyboard/mouse to control all of them.

Input Director also supports a "shared" clipboard, in which you can copy data onto the clipboard on one system, transition across to another and paste.

Input Director requires Windows 2000 (Service Pack 4), Windows XP (Service Pack 2), Windows 2003, Windows Vista, Windows 2008 or Windows 7. The systems must be networked.

  • un lment peut tre dans plusieurs collections (folders) en mme temps ;
  • un lment peut voluer d’un type l’autre ou tre mme multitype ;
  • les lments peuvent tre partags via le web (en utilisant Chandler Hub) ou sur votre propre serveur (si vous installez Chandler Server) ;

Included you will find some free famous brainteasers, and puzzles that are fun and good for brain stretching exercise. Below is a list of activities described in more detail:

brain training and brain games

Brain Training Activities

Brain Reflection Test

This is a simple but effective exercise to test the reflection of your brain, the faster the better, try to get a score of 0.20 second on the first reflection test, also there is a second Reflex Test, try to get 58 points in that one, If you do achieve these two goals then youre very fast, and we should congratulate you!

Brain Creativity

Being creative is a good thing; in fact its essential if we want to make our life better. Stimulating areas of your brain is a healthy process, in this page we will try to wake up (if dormant) the brain creativity potential, this game has 25 levels, lets see how far you could go.

Memory Test

Here you will be able to test your memory, testing it will help you improve it, this game stimulates many areas in your brain responsible for storing and retrieving information, you will be enhancing your memory while still having fun. You can also check this memory game which will check your ability of remembering faces and images its a classic game but effective.

Brain Stretching

This is one way to stretch your brain, the objective is moving a number of disks from one pole/ peg to an other in a cetrain way. You will have to make an effort to arrange the disks the right way, and that in itself is a good exercise that can stretch your brain when playing.

IQ Booster

There are three games about chess that can possibly help you improve your intelligence., you can play chess which is simply the best strategy game, also this second Strategy Game called 8 Queens, and finally another Brain Game called (Chess Knight).

These are very good workouts, chess can help you gain the ability of good thinking and making creative strategies, if you dont know how to play chess, then either check for the rules online before playing, or just jump to the next game.

Sudoku Brain Stimulation

In this page you can either play Sudoku, or solve an already existing Sudoku puzzle that you have, a very nice strategy game and one of the fastest growing games of the 21 century, simple but is considered to be a good brain stimulation and training.

Spatial Intelligence

This is about Rubiks Cube puzzle, a very challenging game, which can stimulate many parts of your brain that you usually dont stimulate, including visual memory and spatial intelligence.

Math Problems:

Its nice to be an athlete, but certainly its super nice to be a Mathlete. Well this is your chance. This is not a complicated Math Game, in fact its a very easy test, however the point is not just to solve the questions provided, but to solve as many questions as possible in a short time, a very good score would be 21 points in this exercise.

Brain Concentration

This brain concentration game is a little bit hard, but thats the point, the harder the game the more stimulation you get, this can help you gain the ability to concentrate better. The game depends on the level you choose, you can start with the lowest level and as you learn the rules of the game you can pick higher levels in this concentration game.

Brain Exercise

This brain exercise is about being able to arrange the numbers in the right order in a very short time, this game depends on the level you choose, its a classic simple game, but a very effective exercise. Have fun and good luck!

Cognitive Training

This training is a lot of fun and simple but can help your cognitive and prediction sense along with your reflection skills, a good player would be someone who predicts well where the exact spot that the ball would hit and therefore have a fast reaction to be in the right spot, a good score is 2 points different than your opponent (which is the computer in this case). Cognitive training game cannot be played with a touchpad, because your reaction is way slower than a mouse when using a touchpad. So if you have a laptop you might get a mouse to play this game.

Finally you can read about Intelligence and read about the IQ or take an IQ Test if you want, please note that the tests are just for brain training purposes and dont determine your actual level. Some games can be addictive so play responsibly.

Please enjoy the mental fitness activities that are offered free of charge. Welcome to your Brain Gym and have a fun workout and get fit!!!! Restimulate your brain with memory vitamins that offer innovative, science-based formulations to naturally enhance and stimulate brain function and support memory.

7 Easy Steps to Heavenly Ribs

Posted by Defunkt One on July 25, 2010

If you are a vegetarian, you might want to skip this blog post because today we are celebrating and sharing the beauty that are pork ribs. While away for the weekend drinking loads of alcohol in La Quinta, CA (thanks CP!) I decided to blogument the wonderful process of cooking ribs.

The preparation is easy and makes for some serious good eatin’ when you are done. Gone are the days of gnawing off meat from the rib bones. Follow these seven simple steps and you too can plate a perfect rack of ribs that are sweet, savory, and sliding off the bones.

defunkt_ribs

Besides using good BBQ sauce, there are two secrets that take the flavor to a completely different level. The first is adding plenty of brown sugar directly after you pull the ribs from the oven. This ensures the brown sugar soaks in nicely all over.

The second finishing touch is spraying apple juice evenly over the ribs before removing from the sizzling hot grill. This technique adds a sweetness back to the ribs after the heat has done its magic. If you execute the above steps with your favorite sauce and spices, you are 100% guaranteed to have smoking good ribs.

this looks very good i just never thought of apple juice i’ll give it a try though.

Try beer instead of water during baking,,,

Posted by Pete on July 26, 2010

Jennifer. The apple juice really kicks butt. try different juices too ;)

Pete. I will definitely try beer on my next batch. And you can bet I will tinker with different varietals too.

Where do you get a clay baking sheet, or tin foil?

Posted by anon on July 26, 2010

Sounds perdy good. I would have to say that if you have the time, bake the ribs for at least four hours at 275 and put them on a high heat grill for way less than twenty minutes. The only reason to grill pork ribs is to get GRILL MARKS!!! and caramelize the sauce you’re mopping on, so more like five to seven minutes should suffice with the upped bake time. Love the apple sauce spray idea and will try next week. Thanks

Posted by Pete 1 on July 26, 2010

Pete. 100% agree with you on the slower + longer cooking time. The reason I shared it this way is it’s easier for people to follow.

The more time you have, the better the ribs will be!

Posted by DefunktOne on July 26, 2010

The real secret that no one ever mentions is that on the non meat side there is a very thin membrane you want to peel that off first
that membrane adds a unpleasing flavor especially with beef ribs.

Posted by bbq master on July 26, 2010

bbq master. Thanks for the tip! I will definitely peel that stuff off next time.

Posted by DefunktOne on July 26, 2010

Hi DefunktOne,

What the heck is a clay sheet???

Thanks

Posted by BBQ Lover on August 12, 2010

BBQ Lover. It is a clay baking/cookie sheet. It is deeper than an ordinary cookie sheet and it transfers the heat more evenly across the cooking surface.

Honestly, it makes the best cookies I have ever seen too!

Posted by DefunktOne on August 12, 2010

“Grilling is to ribs as boiling is to bacon.”

If you want some quality ribs…you haven’t lived until you’ve tried smoking your own. You can smoke on any grill. Just Google how to do it! You cannot beat the flavor.

Oh, and try leaving that rub on for an entire night!

Posted by Sarah on August 14, 2010

I agree, smoking is the way to go with ribs. I use a electric water smoker with hickory wood chips. You can find many recipes on the net.

Posted by james g wolf on August 15, 2010

Wow. You must not be from the south. No smoke on the ribs? Seriously? No smoke? These aren’t real ribs. Invest in an 80$ smoker and use it with a dry rub on the ribs. Smoke for at least 6 hours. Can use BBQ sauce(homemade, its really easy) during the last 2 hours, baste it on. Easy, and I guarantee much better than this.

Posted by chuckt on August 15, 2010

As a rule there is no meat that will accept any more flavor in the meat after 4 hours.

After that amount of time you’re just pasting on a layer of black smoke to the outside of the meat, not good.

I don’t smoke ribs for any longer than 2 hours on the farthest rack away from the heat.

Then it’s into the over in a glass baking dish (covered with foil)at 250 to 275 degrees until the meat reaches an internal temp of 165 degrees for pork ribs, about 4 hours give or take. I also add about a 1/4inch of water with a small amout of liquid smoke and BBQ sauce to the bottom of the pan.

During the last hour or so I will remove the foil and baste the meat with BBQ sauce.

Then on to the grill for 3-5 minutes per side just to caramelize the BBQ sauce.

I’ve won several contest this way!

Posted by flavorman on August 15, 2010

Don’t forget to remove the membrane on the bottom side of the ribs. Also, 350 degrees is too hot. Try 250 for three hours, instead.

Posted by ford prefect on August 15, 2010

Sarah you are right on with smoking the ribs. when smoking the ribs keep the apple juice idea too. i put the juice in a spray bottle and spray the ribs every 1/2 hour or so.

Posted by Len on August 15, 2010

Instead of braising in beer or water, try apple cider (the good old scrumpy, not-too-fizzy, alcoholic kind.) It’ll give a touch of appley sweetness right down to the bone. Plus, if you add a tablespoon or two of vinegar (of the apple-cider or white wine variety,) the acidity will help break down the proteins and tenderize the meat.

Oh yeah, and use a charcoal grill with a few smokey wood chips for good measure! :)

Okay, now I’m hungry…

Posted by Ed on August 15, 2010

Instead of water in step 3, use Dr. Pepper. Trust me.

Posted by Master C on August 15, 2010

Quite interesting – love the blog layout & design too to boot! Apple juice at the end, eh? Certainly worth a try – and I love your visitors comments as well – for trying other juices and cooking it in beer instead of the water. Thanks for sharing!

Posted by The Chef Maven on August 16, 2010

Good recipe but you gotta remove the membrane on the bone side before cooking ribs or else that film tightens up when your trying to chow. Also as a person who is becoming increasingly obsessed with my smoker I must voice that smoked ribs are the true kings of the rib world!

Posted by Alex on August 17, 2010

defunkt one
props to posting dead simple rib recipe/method/philosophy. i’ve rarely met a rib i didn’t like and can add this arrow to my quiver.

Posted by Jaimito on August 17, 2010

I’m so anxious to try this. I’m also going to look for one of these “clay sheets”, which I had never even heard of before. Makes sense though, much like a pizza stone.

By the way, I’ve added some things iron things called “Mangrates” to my gas grill, and I get the most awesome grill marks now. No, I don’t work for them. I do think gas grillers will really dig them.

Posted by Joe M on August 17, 2010

This looks like a delicious recipe, I can hardly wait to try it. The Clay sheet looks like a Large bar Pan from pampered chef.
www.pamperedchef.biz/Helencavallero I use mine to bake almost everything.

Posted by Helen Cavallero on August 17, 2010

Thank you for all the great posts and ideas! I am looking forward to testing the various tweaks proposed by everyone. I will follow-up with another blog-post with pictures and the results!

Posted by DefunktOne on August 18, 2010

I happened across this by accident but its a nice way to cook ribs when the weather keeps me off my Big Green Egg and I will try it. However, this is going to sound weird but trust me on this, try Dr. Pepper as your liquid of choice, I have been using it for several years on all of my Grilling of pork and even Turkey. Do not use the sugar free, just plain ole Dr. Pepper. I also use it when I inject my turkeys and my family insists that we only use it when a liquid is needed.

Posted by wmrawls on August 18, 2010

Okay, sorry, dont like the smoke flavor, but love grilling (I know, Im an oddity!) So I will defintely be trying this recipe as it is!

Posted by Sheyen on August 18, 2010

No wonder Americans are a bunch of Lard Asses. This is disgraceful, this is the food of a glutton. BBQ sauce then brown sugar? No wonder 1 in 3 American kids are obese. Pull your self together America, and stop eating like pigs. Just cos they eat it down on the farm! Your food is the worst in the civilized world, even “moms apple pie” is so full of shit now it glows in the dark.

Posted by British on August 19, 2010

British,

I used to live in London. The Brits calling Yanks ‘Lard Asses’ is like the pot calling the kettle black don’t you think? I am 5’7 140lbs. If you want me to translate the weight into metrics it is 63.5 kilos.

Hardly what you call a ‘Lard Ass’. You should focus on your own Countries tele shows like ‘You are what you eat’ instead of bashing high quality, slowly roasted American gourmet delights. Imagine what Gordon Ramsey would say to you right now!

Posted by DefunktOne on August 19, 2010

The dressing sounds lovely, but..

My preference is: 50% french dressing, 50% honey + chopped garlic (2 – 3 clove, but more isn’t bad). So good… The honey and french dressing caramelizes in such a wonderful way.

Posted by stansoid on August 19, 2010

That’s a bottle of Rudy’s BBQ sauce in the picture!

You’re one real Texan.

Posted by Riccars on August 19, 2010

Gotta ignore British….probably still a little pissy about that 1776 thing! Been looking for a tasty, easy rib recipe and can’t wait to try this. Thanks for the post.

Signed 52 year old 150 lb. Lard Ass :)

Posted by TheRealDave on August 19, 2010

Will Americans EVER get over this obsession with ribs?
I was in NY for a few days and there are actually TV programmes (might have been a whole channel – sorry, station) devoted to what to do with yer ribs.
There is more to cuisine than meat done in an infinite number of slightly differing ways. (I still want to try that cheese in a can stuff though, only my wife won’t let me.)

Posted by Eddie47 on August 20, 2010

Just made these following most of your recipe. Only thing i changed was the bake time and temp. A did 250 for 3.75 hours. Everything else i followed exactly. This recipe is KICK ASS! My wife was like, “NOM NOM NOM NOM”. Thanks for this post! Without it, i would be lost!

Posted by ilikestarz on August 20, 2010

it’s funny you do it like that, because my method is basically opposite. trim that shit off the ribs that is like silverskin first. then but all your herbs on. start a low fire, preferably with mesquite but briquettes is fine. get your woodchips in there and smoke over not too hot for like three hours. then make this sauce out of balsamic vinegar orange juice coke and brown sugar, and put the ribs in a pan and pour it all over and put a tinfoil hat on them and let them steam at 350 for like an hour or so. so damn good.

Posted by michael on August 20, 2010

Starz, thank you and it sounds like you did your ribs just perfect! If you have more time it is always better lower heat for a little longer.

My wife says the same thing about my ribs too. I can’t remember what ribs were like before I figured this recipe out. I used to destroy them that is for sure.

Posted by DefunktOne on August 22, 2010

Delicious! I just made it. A couple of questions and comments. First, I agree the membrane under the ribs should be removed. But how. It is extremely difficult, any tricks? Second, I made pork ribs, in doing so there was a small amount of fat I left on top. Unfortunately, this section sluffed off when I began to eat the ribs. I like it when the BBQ sauce is “glued” to the ribs. My opinion.
Third, when I put the ribs on the grill, I put the “top” down first. Then when i tried to flip it over the meat stuck to the grill since it was so tender from Baking. I’d like the top to have grill marks but this incident kind of messed up the look.
Fourth, I bought a large rack from the grocery store and found that 325 for 2 hours was more than enough.

Best of luck all!!!

I’ve found that sometimes the membrane (silver skin) is impossible to remove. I always try, but if I can’t get it to come off, rather than get frustrated, I just use a sharp knife and poke hundreds of holes in it. That way, the flavor can at least get into the meat.

Emeril Lagasse’s bourbon BBQ sauce goes great with this method. Mop it on for the last 20-30 mins of braising.

Great recipe. I have been searching for a great way to grill ribs for years. I have tried par boiling, roasting, wrapped in foil, low heat, med heat—etc. These were the best ribs that I’ve ever made. I used a Dr. Pepper BBQ sauce (found on one of the internets!) and it was simply amazing…. This is becoming our Friday night ritual… Great post—great recipe. Love it….

UISpec

UISpec is a Behavior Driven Development framework for the iPhone that provides a full automated testing solution that drives the actual iPhone UI. It is modeled after the very popular RSpec for Ruby.

To make finding specific views in the iPhone UI easy, UISpec includes a very powerful view traversal DSL called UIQuery. Not only can you easily traverse the view heirarchy, you can also interact with the views you find.

If you have any questions or issues please post them in the UISpec Group.

Recent News!

Simple scripting language support added to UISpec called UIScript. It allows you to send a string as a script and have it run dynamically. Here is an example of using UIScript to automate a login screen on the iphone:

$(@"textField with placeholder:'Username' setText:'bkuser'");
$(@"textField with placeholder:'Password' setText:'bkpassword'");
$(@"navigationButton label with text:'Login' touch");

This really open up the possibility of using UISpec from other languages like Ruby or Java, or even the ability to have an interactive console that drives the iphone ui. Check it out here.

Demo

Thanks Patrick Hüsler for the video!

Included in the distribution is the UISpecDemo XCode project that shows UISpec running against the Employee Admin application from the Objective-C port of PureMVC. The Spec is defined in DescribeEmployeeAdmin.m and contains 5 examples.

To run the demo:

  • Checkout/export UISpec from the repository using subversion, explained here.
  • From within the folder you did a checkout/export, go to the directory xcode/UISpecDemo and open the file UISpecDemo.xcodeproj
  • Once XCode has loaded the project, set the Active SDK to Simulator 3.0
  • Then click "Build and Go".
  • If you get a build error the first time, just do a Build -> Clean All Targets, and then click "Build and Go" again, this should fix the build errors from now on.

And if you have any issues please post them in the UISpec Group.

Example Spec

The following is just a taste of what's possible with UISpec:

#import "DescribeEmployeeAdmin.h"
#import "SpecHelper.h"

@implementation DescribeEmployeeAdmin

-(void)before {
	//login as default admin before each example
	[SpecHelper loginAsAdmin];
}

-(void)after {
	//logout after each example
	[SpecHelper logout];
}

-(void)itShouldHaveDefaultUsers {
	//Check that all default users are in list
	[[app.tableView.label text:@"Larry Stooge"] should].exist;
	[[app.tableView.label text:@"Curly Stooge"] should].exist;
	[[app.tableView.label text:@"Moe Stooge"] should].exist;
}

-(void)itShouldAddAUser {
	//Click the + button
	[app.navigationButton touch];

	//Set the form fields.
        //Also ".with" is optional so we here we can show the different syntax
	[[app.textField.with placeholder:@"First Name"] setText:@"Brian"];
	[[app.textField.with placeholder:@"Last Name"] setText:@"Knorr"];
	[[app.textField.with placeholder:@"Email"] setText:@"b@g.com"];
	[[app.textField placeholder:@"Username"] setText:@"bkuser"];
	[[app.textField placeholder:@"Password"] setText:@"test"];
	[[app.textField placeholder:@"Confirm"] setText:@"test"];

	//Click the Save button
	[[app.navigationButton.label text:@"Save"] touch];

	//Make sure the error alert view doesn't appear
	[app timeout:1].alertView.should.not.exist;

	//User list should now have a new entry
	[[app.tableView.label text:@"Brian Knorr"] should].exist;
}

@end

Visualizing Flash WMODE Options

A while back I needed to demonstrate how Flash's WMODE settings behave across all platforms and browsers. Instead of trying to explain it in words, I made a standalone test page that illustrates several key concepts.

  • Different WMODEs sort different with elements on the same page.
  • Some WMODEs cause noticeable performance degradation, including the ability to skip Flash frames.
  • Some WMODEs behave differently across Operating Systems.

I hope it is a useful educational tool.
