My Dead Hard Drive story or How I restored my save games

This is the story of how I ressurrected my hard drive.

I've now added additional information in this page of Frequently Asked Questions

How I fritzed my hard drive

I went away on holidays for 2 weeks, came home, turned on my PC and after about 10 seconds, heard some electrical fizzing. Ack!

I quickly turned off my PC, but being an idiot, thought, "I'll just make sure all the cables are in correctly and try again."

So I do that and hit the power switch. This time I get more buzzing and smoke starts coming out of my power supply. Nice one!

Ok, so I go and buy a new power supply. No worries. Get it home, replace the fritzed one. Turn on the PC.

Hmmm, something's wrong. Something's dead wrong. My main Seagate 80gig hard drive is not being recognised. I put my ear next to the drive - there's no sound - it's not even spinning up.

I try a few things - using a different power connector, different ide connector, etc - all to no avail.

My hard drive is dead. Panic sets in...

Backups? What backups?

Uh, yeah - maybe 3 months ago... 3 months of emails, 3 months of code, 3 months of NeverWinterNights save games...

How to fix a hard disk

So I do some searching on Google. I turn up lots of sketchy info about how other people have fixed hard drives. I even try some of them.

One of my favourites - put the hard drive in a plastic bag and put it in the freezer - cooling it down shrinks the parts and may enable the drive to spin up properly. I actually try this and get lots of funny looks from my wife. Still, it doesn't work.

I look at some businesses that do hard drive recovery - the prices are exhorbitant! I could buy 2 replacement drives for those prices.

The techy answer to everything - open it up!

So I look at the hard drive - man, I don't even know what type of screws those are! More searching on Google lifts my ignorance - they are Torx screws.

So off I go to the shops to buy a Torx screwdriver set. Dick Smith's has them for 12 bucks. Cool. I get them home and off comes the cover.

I can't discern anything wrong but I assume the logic board is fried somehow.

Now I get to thinking - I'm almost positive the actual drive is ok - if I could just replace the logic board...

Shopping for hard drives

So I go get a replacement hard drive. I'd only bought this hard drive 5 months previously so it wasn't too hard to find exactly the same model from a number of dealers. I actually end up buying it through my brother's business.

The grand experiment

I get the new drive home and things are all set.

Here are the drives - Mmmmm lovely new drive in its clamshell - am I about to kill it as well???

Note at this point how they look the same - they are both Seagate Barracuda IVs model number ST380021A.

I take the logic board off the old drive.

Ok, let's get the new drive...

Now I take the board off the replacement drive. Here are the 2 logic boards.

Wait a sec. There are some differences there.... Hmmmmm - a closer look is in order.

My original drive's logic board :

The new drive's logic board :

Oh well, still worth a try. I put the new logic board onto the original drive.

Put the cover back on and cross our fingers...

The moment of truth...

I can hear the hard drive spinning up!!!

But it doesn't work! My old 15gig Quantum drive is recognised, but not the seagate.

I fiddle around in the bios and still no go!

We will not be defeated

So what gives? Why doesn't it work? Should I give up?

No!

Time to take a closer look at that drive information.

My original :

And the new drive :

Bugger. The firmwares are different. My original is 3.19. The new one is 3.75. Ok, I obviously need the same firmware.

At this point even my techy friends are thinking I'm crazy.

So I ring around some places and besides having to deal with some hopelessly non-tech sales people I actually find a shop that goes to the effort of looking on the drive for me and it's the right firmware! Cool! I go and buy this one.

Yep, it's got the same firmware :

And the logic boards look the same :

Well actually there's a couple of discrepancies. (At this point I begin to wonder about whether buying hardware is a bit of a lucky dip - I may buy exactly the same hard drive as a friend but be getting something with quite a lot of differences internally which may be more or less reliable etc...)

Well, no point backing out now - let's give it a go.

So I put the new logic board on, plug it in and....

The drive is recognised!

Success!

Phew! My NeverWinterNights save games are back in action!

At this point, I use the other 80gig drive I bought from my brother (the drive with firmware 3.75) and make a copy of the drive.

Then I take the new logic board off the original drive, put it back on the new drive and copy the contents from my brother's drive to it. Now I have a totally new drive with a copy of my original hard drive!

Lastly I wipe my brother's drive and return it to him.

Now, I wonder if I can make use of the warranty on the original drive.........

How To Sell

ShareThis

Monday Jul 19, 2010 by Mike Troiano - President, Holland-Mark Digital

Having a chat with my team tomorrow morning about the most important but under-appreciated skill in business: Selling.

I graduated from Cornell with a degree in advertising, and promptly leveraged my Ivy League credentials into 28 rejection letters from the best agencies in Boston and New York (I still have them all. Bastards.) My Dad convinced me at a truly low point in my life that a marketing guy “who could actually sell something” would be something of a novelty, so I shouldered my pride and took a job selling kitchen knives door-to-door.

I learned more about sales and marketing that summer – knocking on doors and selling knives across kitchen tables – than I ever did in college. When I did land that first gig in New York, a big part of the reason was that very story.

25 years on I’ve graduated to selling things across conference room tables, but little else has changed. Here are the 5 best pieces of advice I have for people who need to do the same.

1. Invest in Relationships.

Chris always says agency new business leads come from 3 sources: Breakfasts, Lunches, and Dinners. He’s got a point.

How many new people did you meet this week? How many cards did you collect at the events you attended? How many acquaintances did you check in with, just to say hello? That guy who e-mailed you looking for a job… did you offer to have coffee with him? If not, you should have. When he gets one – and he will – I promise he’ll remember you.

People who sell do all of these things, and the very best do them with genuine altruism and a desire to help others. In the end your ability to surface opportunities is a straight-line function of the number of people who are thinking about you this week, and job one is to make that happen among as large a group as possible, week in and week out.

2. Look for Problems, not Opportunities.

It’s rare to “find” opportunities. Fact is, most opportunities are made, by people who are very good at uncovering problems.

So look for problems. Walk in other people’s shoes. Make their problem yours, and really apply yourself to the problems best suited to your unique talents and experience. It may take some time, but good things will happen. Trust me.

3. Get the First Meeting Right.

The only “sales meeting” you really have is the first meeting. You have 5 objectives in this meeting, in this order:

  1. Establish warmth – Demonstrate you’re not a dick. To do this, it helps not to be a dick.
  2. Establish competence – The first question on the table in every meeting is “Why should I listen to you?” Bring some content to the dance; a slide or better yet a story that shows you to be someone worthy of attention in your prospect’s busy schedule.
  3. Find and confirm pain – “Pain” is what sales guys call The Problem, as it is perceived by the prospect. Have you asked what the problem is, exactly? Can you re-state it, in a way that makes them go, “Yes, exactly!” If not, slide after slide about how great you are wastes everyone’s time.
  4. Gather inputs for buying vision – “Buying Vision” is what sales guys call the mental picture of what your customer wants to buy. This will inevitably be different in small but important ways from what you want to sell. Closing that gap is what sales is all about.
  5. Get a concrete next step – Finally, leave with an action item. I hate when people come back from a pitch meeting and talk about what a “great meeting” it was. What’s the next step, Ziglar? If there’s not a clear one, it was most definitely NOT a great meeting.

4. Close.

I’m not talking about high pressure tactics here, I’m talking about following up to see where things are. Ask for the business. Show in your words and more importantly through the sustained intensity of your interest that you want the gig. If you don’t do that you don’t want it, and nobody gives their business to someone who’s disinterested in it.

5. Deliver.

Finally, you need to deliver the goods. It’s a small word, and everyone that matters in it is on LinkedIn. Deliver on your promises and do right by people, and one day you’ll turn around and be someone worthy of trust.

And there is no more useful sales tool than that.

That’s all there is to it, folks. Now get out there, and shake it.

Welcome to transformie

A brief introduction on how transformie works from its creator Paul Bakaus.

Transformie is a javascript plugin that comes in less than 5k that you embed into web pages and that brings you CSS Transforms by mapping the native IE Filter API to CSS transitions as proposed by Webkit.

Transformie!

“Transformie“ is my new jQuery plugin (though fairly easy to convert to other libs), a javascript plugin that comes in less than 5k that you embed into web pages and that maps the native IE Filter API to CSS transitions as proposed by Webkit.

Paul Bakaus

Transformie supports the following functions from Webkit’s syntax (in degrees, radians or grads):

  • rotate
  • scale, scaleX, scaleY
  • skew, skewX, skewY
  • matrix (with the exception of the last two modifiers, tx and ty)

The reason the translate functions are not yet supported is the fact that IE’s Matrix function is not as flexible as Webkit’s, since you’re not able to specify tx and ty, the third columns’ first row value and second row value in the actual matrix (there is a way, but then the auto scaling doesn’t work anymore – does’t help much).

However, it’s fairly easy to also add the translate functions and the last two missing values of the matrix function by simply modifying the position top/left values. The only problem is that the actual behaviour then is a bit different than Webkit’s – Webkit’s translate doesn’t modify layout.

Also good to understand is the -webkit-transform-origin css function, that defaults to the center of the element in Webkit. However, in IE, and therefore also in my implemention (at this moment), the top left corner is the origin for calculations. Again, this should be easy to fix using position values.

Anyway, let’s get to the point. To show you how simple it really is to get started with Transformie, I simply included Transformie, and its dependancies Sylvester (great javascript utility, very useful for matrix multiplication!) and jQuery (was already included there, obviously) into my last blog post’s entry Coverflow, and from then it’s prety straight forward – reload Internet Explorer, and you should have CSS transforms!

One implementation detail that stands out is the usage of the terribly handy event “onpropertychange“, which almost behaves like DOMAttrChanged, but is much finer grained. It is capable of telling you whenever a DOM property changes on an element, and when you track the style attribute, it actually passes the actual style that changed along with the event. Neat, huh?

Here’s the download:

Transformie 0.2 (bundle, also contains Query and Sylvester, recommended)

How to swear in English if you're Korean

You wouldn't think a Korean man teaching his class how to swear in English would be so funny.

I love his mannerisms when he says the swears in English; he channels Goodfellas-era Joe Pesci a little bit during his discussion of "fucking". (via mike industries)

Stel uw budget in

Slow motion lightning strike

A lightning strike recorded at 9000 frames per second.

The action across time scales displayed in this video is amazing. One strike hovers in the frame almost the entire time while other hundreds of other strikes flicker in and out in single frames.

3 Universal Goals to Influence People

Post image for 3 Universal Goals to Influence People

July 28, 2010

Central to the art and science of persuasion is understanding three goals for which everyone is aiming.

The art and science of persuasion is often discussed as though changing people's minds is about using the right arguments, the right tone of voice or the right negotiation tactic. But effective influence and persuasion isn't just about patter, body language or other techniques, it's also about understanding people's motivations.

In the scrabble to explain technique, it's easy to forget that there are certain universal goals of which, at least some of the time, we are barely aware. Influence and persuasion attempts must tap into these to really gain traction.

Techniques of persuasion

To illustrate these universal goals, let's have a look at six common techniques of influence that you'll have come across either explicitly or implicitly (from Cialdini, 2001):

  1. Liking: It's much easier to influence someone who likes you. Successful influencers try to flatter and uncover similarities in order to build attraction.
  2. Social proof. People like to follow one another, so influencers imply the herd is moving the same way.
  3. Consistency. Most people prefer to keep their word. If people make a commitment, particularly if it's out loud or in writing, they are much more likely to keep it. Influencers should try to gain verbal or written commitments.
  4. Scarcity. Even when companies have warehouses full of a product, they still advertise using time-limited offers that emphasise scarcity. People want what they can't have, or at least what might be running short.
  5. Authority. People are strongly influenced by experts. Successful influencers flaunt their knowledge to establish their expertise.
  6. Reciprocity. Give something to get something. When people feel indebted to you they are more likely to agree to what you want. This feeling could arise from something as simple as a compliment.

There are many more, but these six are often quoted, especially in business circles. The reason these work is that they tap into three basic human goals, and it's these goals that are the key to understanding how to influence and persuade people (from Cialdini and Goldstein, 2004).

1. Goal of affiliation

In the most part humans are social so they want to be liked. Rejection is no fun and we'll do almost anything to avoid it.

We reciprocate because it sends a message about our sociability. We try to elicit liking from other people by behaving in ways we guess will be attractive, like agreeing with them or complimenting them.

Not only do we want approval from specific people, we also want it from society at large (see this article on conformity). We want the things we do, think and believe to be broadly in line with what others do, think and believe. It's not impossible to be different, but it is difficult.

The techniques of liking and reciprocity mentioned above both clearly play on our desire for affiliation, as do many other techniques of persuasion and influence. Most people are joiners and followers so influencers like to give us something to join and someone to follow.

2. Goal of accuracy

People who don't care about doing things correctly never get anywhere in life. To achieve our goals in what is a complicated world, we have to be continually trying to work out the best course of action.

It could be accuracy in social situations, such as how to deal with the boss or how to make friends, or it could be accuracy in financial matters like how to get a good deal, or it could be accuracy in existential matters. Whatever the arena, people are always striving for the 'right' answer.

Influencers understand our need to be right and so they try to offer things that appeal to our need for accuracy. For example, experts or authority figures influence people heavily because they offer us a 'correct' view or way of doing things, especially one that we don't have to think too carefully about.

The techniques of social proof and scarcity both nag at our desire to be accurate because we assume other people are likely to be right and we don't want to miss out on a bargain.

3. Goal of maintaining positive self-concept

People want to protect their view of themselves because it takes a long time to build up a semi-coherent view of oneself and one's place in the world.

We work hard to keep our world-views intact: we want to maintain our self-esteem, to continue believing in the things we believe in and to honour whatever commitments we have espoused in the past. In an inconsistent world we at least should be self-consistent.

Persuaders and influencers can leverage this goal by invoking our sense of self-consistency. A trivial but instructive example is the foot-in-the-door technique. This is where an influencer asks you to agree to a small request before asking for a bigger one. Because people feel somehow that it would be inconsistent to agree to one request and then refuse the next one, they want to say yes again.

People will go to surprising lengths to maintain their positive view of themselves.

Unconscious motivators

Everybody wants to be accurate, to affiliate with others and to maintain their concept of themselves, however little awareness we might have of these goals. Effective persuasion and influence attempts can target one or more of these goals.

With these goals in mind it is possible to tailor persuasion attempts to the particular characteristics of an audience, rather than relying on transparent generic techniques. Whether it's at work, dealing with your boss, or at home negotiating with a neighbour, we can all benefit from thinking about other people's unconscious motivators. Then we can work out how to align our message with their goals.

→ More to come on the latest research into influence and persuasion.

Migrating Multiple Blogs into WordPress 3.0 Multisite

WordPress 3.0 includes new multisite features, meaning that it can run many blogs, even with their own separate domains, on one WordPress installation. This tutorial explains how to migrate multiple WordPress installations into one new WordPress 3.0 multisite. You can migrate sites that are using their own domain, as well as sites using a subdomain on your main domain.

This tutorial assumes that you are hosting WordPress on a site using cPanel. If you are using something else to configure your server, you will have to adapt these instructions.

Contents

Steps to Follow

0. Backup your sites

Generate a full site backup in cPanel. It might also help to copy all the files on the server via FTP, so that you can easily access the files for plugins and themes, which you'll need in a later step.

1. Export from your existing WordPress installations

In each of your existing WordPress installations, go Tools > Export in WordPress. Download the WXR files that contains all your posts and pages for each site. See the instructions on the Tools Export SubPanel.

Make sure that your export file actually has all the posts and pages. You can verify this by looking at the last entry of the exported file using a text editor. The last entry should be the most recent post. Some plugins can conflict with the export process, generating an empty file, or a partially complete file. To be on the safe side, you should probably disable all plugins before doing the exports. It's also a good idea to first delete all quarantined spam comments as these will also be exported making the file unnecessarily large.

2. Install WordPress 3.0

Install WordPress 3.0 to the root of your public_html directory. It has to be at the root or the multi-site feature won't work. Follow the instructions for Installing WordPress in the Codex.

3. Create a wildcard subdomain

Create a wildcard subdomain. This should be as easy as going into cPanel and creating a subdomain named *.

4. Activate multi-site

Activate multi-site in your WordPress 3.0 install. This involves editing wp-config.php a couple of times. You need to use the subdomain, not the subdirectory, option. See the instructions in the codex on how to Create A Network.

5. Create a test blog

Create a test blog in the WordPress 3.0 Superadmin > Sites panel. It should show up as subdomain.yourdomain.com. Test the blog to make sure everything is working correctly at this point.

6. Install the WordPress MU Domain Mapping plugin

Install the WordPress MU Domain Mapping plugin. Folllow the installation and configuration instructions in the readme.

7. Create blogs for each site you want to import

Create blogs for each of the sites you want to host at separate domains. For example, one importedblogdotorg.mydomain.com.

8. Import WXR files for each blog

Go to the backend of each blog, and import the exported WXR file for each blog. Map the authors to the proper users, or create new ones. Be sure to check the box that will pull in photos and other attachments. See the instructions on Tools Import SubPanel.

9. Copy theme and plugin files

Copy the theme and plugin files from your old WP installs to the directories in the new wp-content. You can activate themes for the network, or you can go to Superadmin > Sites, then click edit on the site you want, and enable a given theme for just that site.

10. Edit WordPress configuration settings for each site.

Edit the configuration settings, widget, etc. for each site. By the end of this step, each site should look exactly as it did before, only with the URL subdomain.yourdomain.com rather than its correct, final URL.

11. Park domains at your main site

Park each of your domain names at your main site. You can do this easily in cPanel. If you've been using the domains as add-on domains, then you need to delete the add-on domains first, then create the parked domains.

The domains that you wish to park must be pointed to the nameservers of your hosting provider.

12. Map the domains

Go to Superadmin > domains, and map the sites to the new domain. It should be as easy as addig site id 1 maps to mywebsite1.com.

Potential Problems

Limitations of PHP configuration

You may run into trouble with the PHP configuration on my host. There are two potential problems. One is that PHP's `max_upload_size` will be too small for the WXR file. The other problem is that the PHP memory limit might be too small for importing all the posts. There are a couple ways to solve it. One is to ask your hosting provider to up the limits, even temporarily. The other is to put a `php.ini` file in your `/wp-admin/` and `/wp-includes` directories that ups the limits for you. (`php.ini` files are not recursive, so it has to be in those directories.) Something like a 10 MB upload limit and a 128 MB memory limit should work, but check with your hosting provider first so that you don't violate the terms of your agreement.

Search the WordPress support forums for help with PHP configuration problems.

Converting add-on domains to parked domains

Deleting add-on domains in cPanel and replacing them with parked domains will also delete any domain forwarders and e-mail forwarders associated with those domains. Be aware of this, so that you can restore those forwarders once you've made the switch.

Description

ffmpeg-php is an extension for PHP that adds an easy to use, object-oriented API for accessing and retrieving information from video and audio files. It has methods for returning frames from movie files as images that can be manipulated using PHP's image functions. This works well for automatically creating thumbnail images from movies. ffmpeg-php is also useful for reporting the duration and bitrate of audio files (mp3, wma...). ffmpeg-php can access many of the video formats supported by ffmpeg (mov, avi, mpg, wmv...)

News

09/21/07 - Offical Gentoo package available! Gentoo users can now install using 'emerge ffmpeg-php'.

07/16/07 - Offical Debian package available! Debian users can now install using 'apt-get install php5-ffmpeg'. A big thanks to Raphael Geissert for all his work on this, and for all the tips on getting ffmpeg-php to play well with Debian's packaging system. A unoffical package for PHP4 is available at his personal repository.

05/24/07 - Ffmpeg and ffmpeg-php installation services available. For $75 USD (via Paypal) I will install ffmpeg and ffmpeg on your Linux server. Email ffmpeg.php@gmail.com for more info.

08/15/06 - The ffmpeg-php sources have been migrated from CVS to Subversion. CVS is still available from the command line but will no longer be updated.

Requirements

Compatibility

ffmpeg-php is not compatible with ffmpeg's swscaler. Enabling swscaler in ffmpeg disables the img_convert functions that ffmpeg-php needs to do its thing. Ffmpeg must be configured and compiled without the '--enable-swscale' flag.

Some users have posted Windows builds to the ffmpeg-php google group. I hear from folks that they work great but I haven't had time to test them personally yet.

Apparently there is some sort of conflict between the php IMAP extension and ffmpeg-php in certain cases. The IMAP extension seems to conflict with a few other extensions so for now I am assuming it is a problem with IMAP.

Features

Sites Using ffmpeg-php

Here's a list of some of my favorite sites using ffmpeg-php.

If you have a site to add to the list, shoot me an email at ffmpeg[dot]php[at]gmail[dot]com

Installation

These instructions are for Linux. I don't know the first thing about Windows or Mac.

Building the ffmpeg-php Extension
Build and install PHP if it is not already installed
Unpack the ffmpeg-php sources
  1. tar -xjf ffmpeg-php-X.x.x.tbz2
Change to the ffmpeg-php extension directory and run phpize (included with your PHP installation) to build configuration files. NOTE: if your php installation does not include phpize, you may have to install a php-dev package for your distro (usually named: php-dev, php-devel or similar)
  1. cd ffmpeg-php-X.x.x/
  2. phpize
Configure and build the extension.
  1. ./configure && make
Install the shared extension.
  1. sudo make install
If everything went as planned, ffmpeg-php is now installed as a shared extension.

Configuration

If you've built ffmpeg-php as a shared extension but want to make it available to all scripts by default, add extension=ffmpeg.so to your php.ini file to load ffmpeg-php at PHP startup. Make sure to restart apache when you are done to reload php.ini.

Testing the Installation

RESULTS: You should get a listing of the methods provided by the ffmpeg-php module as well as some test output from the methods.

Usage

If you've the installed ffmpeg-php extension as a shared library but haven't set it to auto-load in your php.ini file, you'll need to use the PHP dl() function to make ffmpeg-php available to your scripts. Add the following PHP code to the beginning of scripts you want to call ffmpeg-php methods in.

<?php
$extension
"ffmpeg";
$extension_soname $extension "." PHP_SHLIB_SUFFIX;
$extension_fullname PHP_EXTENSION_DIR "/" $extension_soname;

// load extension
if(!extension_loaded($extension)) {

dl($extension_soname) or die("Can't load extension $extension_fullname\n");
}
?>

FAQ

Q: How come it doesn't work with some Quicktime movies?

A: ffmpeg must be compiled with zlib support to read Quicktime movies with compressed headers.

Q: How come it doesn't work with <myfavoritetype> movies?

A: The ffmpeg-php extension uses ffmpeg libraries for access to video info. Some movie types have limited support in ffmpeg. Some encoders create non-standard movies which may cause problems for ffmpeg. If the movie can't be read correctly by ffmpeg then it won't work with ffmpeg-php. Consult the ffmpeg documentation for more info on supported formats. If ffmpeg-php won't read a movie, try using the ffmpeg command line program to convert the movie to another type. If it fails, then ffmpeg (and thus ffmpeg-php) don't support your movie type. If ffmpeg converts it correctly then the problem is most likely in ffmpeg-php, in which case you can bug me about it.

Q: ffmpeg-php doesn't do the one freakin' thing I absolutely need! Can you add it to the program?

Ffmpeg-php was written specifically for a project I was working on and have now finished. There is no ongoing development at all beyond just keeping it compatible with the ever changing ffmpeg API (and even then I just wait for someone to complain). That said, I am available for hire if you need further development or customization as long as the resulting code is made open source also.

Q: I can't get it to install. What's the deal?

Ffmpeg-php can sometimes be a pain to install. This is mostly due to the strange voodoo it has to do to detect if GD is available in PHP. Sometimes this fails for no apparent reason. Add to that the ever changing ffmpeg SVN and it can get even more tricky. If you get stuck, ask on the Google group and someone can probably talk you through it. If you get really stuck I'd be happy to install ffmpeg and ffmpeg-php (and any other videoshare prerequisites) on your server for $75 bucks. I'll need ssh root access to the machine and about 45 minutes. (Linux only, I'm not a Windows dude) Feel free to contact me for the details: ffmpeg.php@gmail.com

Superbude Hotel Interior by studio Dreimeta in Hamburg, Germany

Since 2008, the Superbude Hotel have introduced a new hotel concept as the result of the super “re-design” by Germany-based studio Dreimeta. The six floors of a former printing house were redesigned to create a long-term home with 74 stylish double and multi-bed rooms invite you to stay a while and relax. It is very great concept where anybody who checks in here is visitor and visited, guest and host, admirer and admired, all in one, so that you will be feel staying with friends at once living in a hotel. The design idea dreamed up by 3Meta to create a weird and wonderful new purpose, sofas have been covered with used jeans, kitchen sinks made out of seamen’s chests, and old water pipes have been screwed together to create shelves and tables. In consideration of Hamburg as a harbour town, some of the furniture has been made out of pallets and thick ropes. Nordic by nature! Introducing Selenium??

To Automate or Not to Automate? That is the Question!??

Is automation always advantageous? When should one decide to automate test cases?

It is not always advantageous to automate test cases. There are times when manual testing may be more appropriate. For instance, if the application’s user interface will change considerably in the near future, then any automation would need to be rewritten. Also, sometimes there simply is not enough time to build test automation. For the short term, manual testing may be more effective. If an application has a very tight deadline, there is currently no test automation available, and it’s imperative that the testing get done within that time frame, then manual testing is the best solution.
